How Is ACT Different?
While thoughts and feelings occur instantly within us, how we respond to them is a matter of choice. Most of us engage the dichotomy of embracing or resisting our thoughts and feelings. ACT offers a third approach: observing with neutrality.
Experiential Engagement
Avoidance is a first-line behavioral solution to human discomfort. Generally, this approach is known as experiential avoidance. While temporarily effective, avoidance rarely moves us toward what we want more of in our lives. ACT employs strategies for engagement, promoting behaviors that help to move with anxiety, rather than allow it to limit our potential.
Detachment from Thoughts/Feelings
Thoughts and feelings arise naturally. In fact, they often appear without warning. Unlike objects in the physical world, we are not able to simply remove them or cut them off– this is not how our minds work. Ironically, attempting to do so only tends to give up more of them. However, there is a way to be with our thoughts and feelings without being overwhelmed by them. ACT offers a variety of methods to achieve this end.
